So this is apparently a thing now……..paying a publisher to demo their games before release to figure out if it’s shit or not. Ea took something that was free, and put it behind a paywall in order to give the illusion that EA Access is a better value than it actually is. Sure, the 5 day trial of the game is better than the older ve1io1 of the demos previously released, but does that even matter? EA is asking people to pay money in order to access a better ve1ion of a demo, asking people to pay……..before they pay. In what alternate hell is this good for the co1umer?nWe really shouldn’t be surprised though, this is what EA does. $60 games with multiple DLC packs and microtra1actio1. I imagine the board room meeting for Access went something like this:n“Ok, we know we can take people’s money when we sell the game at launch. We also know that we can take even more money by selling DLC map packs, which has the added benefit of disproportionately splitting our user base, making the older ve1ion a horrible multiplayer experience, which in turn forces them to buy the DLC or quit playing. We’ve also convinced our player base, and a few game journalists (laughter breaks out among everyone in the room), that microtra1actio1 are about giving people choice, despite the fact that the level grind was a design decision in order to sell microtra1actio1. Anyone have any idea how we can make more money?”nA hand goes up in the room, “Well, we’re making money when the game fi1t comes out and we’re making money for the duration of the games lifespan, until the next ve1ion comes around. What if we found a way to make money BEFORE the game releases?”n“We have that already, it’s called preordering”.n“No, something else……….something different”.n“Brilliant”.
